Free 5 Letter Word Finder

Quick answer: Stuck on today's Wordle with two green letters and a pile of gray ones? This free 5 letter word finder turns what you already know into the list of real words that still fit: type the letters that are in the right place (green), the letters that are in the word but in the wrong place (yellow), and the letters that are not in the word at all (gray), and it searches a list of valid, everyday 5-letter words instantly, right in your browser. Every result is a recognizable word — no obscure letter combinations — so the list is directly playable. It works the same way for Scrabble and Words With Friends — no signup, no app, no waiting on a server.

Enter what you know and press Find Words — a list of valid, everyday 5-letter words is searched instantly in your browser.

Tip: a letter that is green or yellow is never treated as excluded, even if you also typed it in the gray box — that matches how Wordle handles a doubled letter when one copy is right and the other is not.

How to Use the 5 Letter Word Finder

  1. Type your green letters into the five boxes, one per box, in the position Wordle confirmed them. Leave any box blank when that position is still unknown — a blank box matches any letter. The boxes auto-advance as you type, and Backspace on an empty box jumps back one.
  2. Type your yellow letters — letters Wordle told you are in the word but in the wrong spot — into the yellow field, in any order, with no spaces. Each yellow letter must appear somewhere in every result, but not necessarily in the position you guessed it.
  3. Type your gray letters — letters Wordle ruled out — into the gray field. Every result will exclude all of them. One exception, handled automatically: a letter that is green or yellow somewhere is never treated as excluded, which is exactly how Wordle treats a doubled letter when one copy is right and the other is not.
  4. Press Find Words (or Enter). The result count appears first, then the matching words as tiles, up to 200 at once — press Show all when more match. Narrow further by adding another green, yellow, or gray letter from your next guess and searching again.
  5. Press Clear to start a fresh puzzle, or Random word for a random 5-letter word — useful as a Wordle opener or when you need a puzzle idea and do not want to pick one yourself.

Common Use Cases

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you use a 5 letter word finder for Wordle?
Enter what Wordle already told you: green letters go in the five position boxes in their exact spots, yellow letters (in the word, wrong place) go in the yellow field, and gray letters (not in the word) go in the gray field. Press Find Words and the finder lists every 5-letter word that still fits. Pick your next guess from the list, play it, and feed the new green/yellow/gray feedback back in — two or three rounds usually narrows it to one word.
What is the best starting word for Wordle?
A strong opener covers the most common letters: CRANE, SLATE, CRATE, TRACE, and AUDIO are all popular because they test high-frequency consonants and vowels early. Our Random word button can also deal you an opener. After the first guess, the finder matters more than the opener — feed the feedback in and let it narrow the list.
Why does the finder still show a word with a gray letter in it?
It should not — unless that letter is also green or yellow somewhere. Wordle scores doubled letters this way: if the answer has one E and you guess a word with two E's, one E can be green or yellow while the second E is gray. The finder follows that rule, so a letter that is confirmed anywhere is never excluded by the gray field. If you see a word with a purely gray letter, check that the letter is not also in your green or yellow fields.
How many 5-letter words are there?
Wordle accepts over 14,000 five-letter guesses, but most of them are obscure combinations you would never use in a sentence. This finder deliberately searches only the valid subset — 2,765 real, everyday words (the Wordle answer list plus other common words) — so every result is a recognizable word. That keeps the list short, playable, and directly useful for Wordle, where the answer is always a common word.
Can I use this 5 letter word finder for Scrabble?
Yes. Leave the green boxes blank, put the letters your word must contain in the yellow field, and put letters you cannot use in the gray field. For a pure rack search — every word your letters can make — put all your rack letters in yellow and nothing in gray; the results are every 5-letter word containing those letters. Note Scrabble's official word list (NASPA/CSW) differs slightly from Wordle's, so tournament players should cross-check close calls.
Does the finder work for Words With Friends?
Yes, the same way as Scrabble: green boxes for fixed positions, yellow for letters the word must contain, gray for letters to avoid. Words With Friends uses its own word list, which is close to but not identical to Wordle's, so a rare match may not be playable there — but every common word the finder shows will be.
What if no words match my letters?
First check the gray field: a letter cannot be both ruled out and confirmed, and a typo in a green box (wrong position) kills every result. Second, check yellow letters: each one must appear in the word, so a yellow letter from an early guess that you misremembered will empty the list. Clear one field at a time and re-search to find which constraint is wrong.
Is this 5 letter word finder free?
Yes — free, no signup, no app, and everything runs in your browser. Your letters never leave your device, and there is no account, no limit on searches, and no word list to download.
